I tutor academic writing and college admissions essays by helping students develop their reading and thinking skills. Those are the foundational skills that make one a great writer, which is why I focus on the fundamentals rather than the mechanics or surface-level issues. I am also available for economics and philosophy tutoring, please contact me for more information or to ask questions.
My tutoring/teaching background includes several years as a writing tutor at my university's writing center, a philosophy tutor and teaching assistant, and a college admissions essay tutor. More details are available on my CV.
My undergraduate admissions background includes being accepted to 10 undergraduate programs with 1 waitlist and 0 rejections. My graduate admissions background includes being accepted to 9 programs (including Cornell, NYU, UCLA, USC) with 4 rejections (UChicago, Yale, UPenn, LSE).
I love coaching and tutoring students in academic writing and college admissions essays. I enjoy developing a student's reading and thinking skills, as I feel like many approaches to writing tutoring focus on the mechanics rather than the fundamental skill that underlies good writing.
Academic Writing
Constructing arguments, thesis development, essay structure, logical flow, academic tone, and methodical revision strategy.
College Admissions Essays
Brainstorming the right story, writing unique essays, appropriately using a writer's voice, and not boring your reader.
Tutoring sessions are most effective when we can have multiple, consistent meetings throughout a month. It is especially important 2-3 meetings in the first weeks, as my approach to writing is much different than methods taught in the classroom. This applies for both academic writing and college admissions essays. Tutoring, however, ought to be catered to the individual, so please reach out to me and we can discuss the details.
Regarding logistics, I am typically free after 4:00pm PST on weekdays, with availability all day on the weekends. We can meet on Zoom, FaceTime, or whatever is convenient for the student.
Statements of purpose, personal statements, and application essays. (Note: I am still learning HTML and CSS. So if the documents don't display correctly, please contact me and I will send them to you.)
